wednesdayINreview: Batdevil and Green Dead
Ever since the dawn of four-color heroics, some books each week have risen above all the others. With spoilers now lessened due to 24 hours 1 week, the gaijINside staff have decided to tell you what they liked. It’s time for another wednesdayINreview.
Batman and Robin #6: The second arc finishes up of the brand new Batman and Robin series with a new villain known as The Flamingo. The Flamingo is a character that was first mentioned back in Morrison’s run of Batman issue #666, and it is revealed the he is an accomplice of Dr.Hurt. The issue moves at a fairly fast pace showing how deadly this new adversary can be. Jason Todd has captured Batman and has set up a little trap for him; if one million people visit a certain website a webcam will turn on showing Batman and Robin in the nude revealing their secret identities. In Morrison’s Batman and Robin he shows Grayson as more of a playful Batman that likes to be seen and show off a little bit. This series has shown promise from issue one and lets hope that it continues to do so.
Daredevil #502: Andy Diggle continues the wild ride of Matt Murdock being the leader of The Hand ninja clan. In this issue, Matt is shown finally taking control of his new minions, and the message that he wants to send is corruption is something that will not be tolerated, under penalty of death. Diggle has gone to great lengths to make sure that Daredevil keeps the feel of Brubaker’s excellent run, and he is doing fantastic. During the course of the issue, it is revealed that Matt’s mentor, Stick, is not dead, but in a coma making his heart beat at less than once per minute. With that, Daredevil’s master plan is put into motion to destroy The Hand from the inside.
Green Lantern Corps #42: This issue will be one that is read and re-read for weeks to come. In this issue, we see the Black Lantern attack on Oa take a drastic turn when the Black Lanterns stop attacking and start trying to destroy the Green Power Battery. The Green Lanterns put up an amazing fight, that even causes them to release their captive Red Lantern who is slaughtered by an Alpha Lantern. But then it hits something that will make anyone with a heart and a love for DC comics in the past ten years; Kyle Rayner, dies giving his life to save the Power Battery. This four page scene has more emotion in it than all others on the shelf this week.
Walking Dead #67: In this issue, we finally find out what the scientist has known to make the team head to Washington, DC… absolutely nothing. This causes Rick and team to flip out and beat him senselessly. Kirkman shows off once again something that makes his books so wonderful: the intricate relationships between his characters. In this issue, he shows how these relationships can be broken to never be repaired. Before the end of the issue, a new character walks up seemingly fine and asks to speak to the head of the group. Have they finally arrived at Washington DC or are they about to meet someone worse than the Governor?
These are the books that the gaijINside staff felt noteworthy. While these may not be all the best books out there, and are likely not all they read that week, these are the books we consider worth checking out. Want to let us know what you read? I don’t know how much I buy the Hand, experts in resurrection, not being able to tell when a guy is dead or not. I have little faith in the Hand’s leadership-appointment committee.
Also, Kyle, betting he’ll be back by Blackest Night’s end.
