Tokusatsu T’day: South Korea henshins into new toku series

Japan isn’t the only country that can make toku shows (because America has such a great track record). South Korea is making a new special effects series called SFX Fantasy Rayforce.  No premier date found as of yet.

From the looks of the trailer, it’s going to be very magic based. A non-suited mage character who actually participates in battle is unique. Her support spells look pretty awesome. Of course, then the giant robot shows up.

The costumes aren’t the most creative. The villain in the trailer looks like he stole his off the set of Kamen Rider Hibiki. The giant robot has the generic Gundam-esque face. Of course, it’s not the first thing South Korea “borrowed” to make its own, but it still looks neat.

It’s also not South Korea’s first venture into the toku hero world. Back in late 2006, South Korea began airing the series SFX Drama Erexion. Perhaps this is the start of a new franchise of toku hero series. Haven’t seen a premier date yet.

That does look cool, but it’s still not up there with Japanese Tokusatsu. Too many effects all at once and no time to catch your breath.
