Tokusatsu T’day: It’s A Family Affair

November 25th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

Obviously, Disney aims Power Rangers at young children. They try to keep things a little family friendly. At the same time, they have to expose the youths of America to multiculturalism. Every Ranger team has been multiracial, which makes families a little out of place. Still, it has happened. In the theme of being with the family this Thanksgiving, we’ll dive into the family tree of Rangerdom.

And no, I don’t know the source of Cosby Zordon, but it seems fitting.

Andros and Karone, the Red Space Ranger and the second Pink Lost Galaxy Ranger:
The plot of Power Rangers In Space was two-fold. The four former Turbo Rangers were on a mission to save Zordon from the forces of evil, and Andros was out to save his sister, Karone, from the side of evil. The plots converged, since the major threat to the newly-formed Space Rangers, Astronema, was actually Andros’ sister Karone, having been raised evil and brainwashed. After Karone was saved in the epic Countdown To Destruction finale, she later showed up in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, tracking down the Pink Quasar Saber, as it’s previous weilder had died in battle. For the rest of the series, Karone performed the role of the Pink Galaxy Ranger until the end, where the Saber reincarnated it’s previous owner.

Leo and Mike Corbett, the Red Lost Galaxy Ranger and second Magna Defender:
On Mirinoi, five adults pulled the Quasar Sabers out of stone to defend their allies. Mike Corbett pulled the Red Quasar Saber out of the stone, but soon (presumably) fell to his death, only able to pass the Saber on to his brother Leo in his dying moments. Leo then led the path of the Red Lost Galaxy Ranger, defending the Earth colony Terra Venture from threats. On their adventures, the Magna Defender became an ongoing, mysterious ally. Only after a few adventures, the Magna Defender’s history was revealed: a warrior had merged his soul with that of Mike’s, and only in his sacrifice would Mike be saved. With Mike now returned to Terra Venture, he took up the mantle of Magna Defender and returned to his security post.

Dana and Ryan Mitchell, the Pink and Titanium Lightspeed Rescue Rangers:
At a young age, Ryan Mitchell was presumed dead when his father’s car was in a horrific accident. His sister, Dana, and father Captain William Mitchell, survived. Years later, Operation Lightspeed was formed, and Dana was it’s introductory Pink Ranger, taking orders from her father. On what would be Ryan’s 20th birthday, a mysterious new warrior arrived, having stolen Operation Lightspeed’s prototype Titanium Morpher that Carter Grayson failed to effectively use. After a battle with this new Titanium Ranger, the Rangers discovered that it was actually Ryan, and that he was actually saved from the car accident by the demon Diabolico, only to be hidden away until his 20th birthday. Ryan soon used the Titanium Ranger powers for good alongside his sister.

Alex and Wes Collins, the Red Time Force Rangers of the 31st and 21st Centuries:
Now here’s an awkward one. No deals with the devil, no brainwashing. Alex Collins was the Red Time Force Ranger of 3000, romantically involved with Jen Scotts, until he was fatally/non-fatally (it’s not exactly clear) injured in the line of duty, attempting to prevent the criminal Ransik from escaping the law into the year 2001. Jen and three other Time Force operatives chased him to 2001, and met Wes Collins, Alex’ doppleganger and apparent historical ancestor. As the Chrono Morphers they took with them required the Red Chrono Morpher to be active, and it was DNA-locked, they required Wes to join them, as he shares DNA with Alex. As the new Red Time Force Ranger, Wes fought as Red. Alex later appeared in the present, rejuvinated, and took temporary command as Red Ranger, only to return it to Wes once things didn’t work as well. Alex returned to the future with the others once Ransik was apprehended, leaving Wes to form the basis of Time Force in 2001.

Hunter and Blake Bradley, the Crimson and Navy Thunder Ninja Rangers:
Adopted brothers, Hunter and Blake were the only survivors of Lothor’s attack on the Ninja Academies. While they initially fought the Wind Ninja Rangers while brainwashed, upon meeting the spirits of the dead parents and learning the truth about their death, they joined with the Wind Ninja Rangers. Easily, they have the most basic familial tie, even if they are adopted.

Sky Tate and his father, the Blue/Red SPD Rangers of different times:
Not much is known about Sky’s father, other than he served in SPD as the Red Ranger years before A-Squad wore BMX armor, and died in battle against Mirloc, saving civilians in an armor ridiculously similar to Time Force designs. Sky eventually became the Blue SPD B-Squad Ranger, having gained force field abilities from genetic experiments his parents (and the other SPD B-Squad Rangers’ parents) underwent before they were born. Years later, Mirloc broke out of prison, and fought the new Rangers. In honor of his father, Sky borrowed the red SPD morpher, went into battlized mode, and defended his father’s honor by capturing Mirloc.

Nick Russel, Udonna, Leanbow, Niella, and Clare, the Red and White Mystic Rangers, Wolf Warrior, and the Gatekeepers
The biggest family in Ranger history, yet nothing compared to the source material (Mahou Sentai Magiranger had every Ranger be related). Udonna, the White Mystic Ranger, lost her sister, Niella (the first Gatekeeper known) in The Great Battle. She had a son, Nick, whom they gave to a human family after Leanbow, her husband, fell to the forces of evil. Her niece, Clare, would eventually become the second Gatekeeper alongside Nick as the Red Mystic Force Ranger, and Leanbow returned to the side of good as the Wolf Warrior (and Nick temporarily became Koragg). All of Mystic Force is pretty much the story of this family in one way or another.

Madison and Vida Rocca, the Blue and Pink Mystic Rangers
Sisters, who both work at the Rock Porium and fight evil as the Mystic Rangers. Not much depth here; they occasionally mentioned being sisters, and that was about it.

R.J. and Master Finn, the Wolf Jungle Fury and Shark Spirit Rangers
Technically, Master Finn’s not a Ranger. R.J. rejected the teaching of his father, and instead of learning to use the Shark Spirit like him, he struck out on his own and mastered the Wolf Spirit. R.J. trained the core three Jungle Fury Rangers, until they needed to learn more from other Masters. Casey went and learned how to call the Shark Zord, Shark Sabers, and eventually the Shark Spirit Ranger, the embodiment of Master Finn’s powers and skill, in their fight against evil.
