Tokusatsu T’day: The Ranger Life Of The American Teenager

January 6th, 2009 by Chad Bonin

So, I’m randomly home on a Sunday, and I see a marathon of some show on ABC Family: The Secret Life Of The American Teenager. Set at Ulysses S. Grant High School, some chick got knocked up, and Molly Ringwold is her mom.

What the hell does this have to do with Tokusatsu? No actors, no plots, probably no crew. BUT… it was the same school that the Rangers went to from Mighty Morphin’ to In Space, except it was decked out as Angel Grove High School. Watch the promo, and it’s almost the same shot that you saw every episode back 16 years ago.

Storm Coming in at Lightspeed RPMs

December 12th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

New PRRPM Figs!!

New PRRPM Figs!!

Reported in from Toy Fare magazine, the Spring 2009 line of Bandai’s Power Rangers figures will be Power Rangers RPM (which can be found in stores now for the holiday season). However, Toy Fare also reports that 2 new chaser figures are coming. From Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, we are getting the first American made ranger, the Titanium Ranger. And from Power Rangers Ninja Storm we get the Green Samurai Ranger (which oddly gets called Super Samurai Green Ranger). The article also list limited edition chrome figures as well (hopefully won’t be half done like the SPD chrome figures). Well happy hunting action figure collectors, I have a feeling I’ll have to find these for myself and my editor!

Toy Fare magazine scan came from our good friends at RangerBoard. Click on image to read the article from Toy Fare.

Turkeysatsu T’day: This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

November 27th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

Ever wonder why we don’t see too many exclusive-to-Power-Rangers monsters?

Back in the day, they gave us Turkeyjerk, a monster created by Bulk and Skull. He was a turkey monster with a basting gun.

Yeah. While we may get original villains or the occasional grunt, we started off with bad Thanksgiving dinner.

Happy Thanksgiving, and shudder in fear.

Tokusatsu T’day: It’s A Family Affair

November 25th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

Obviously, Disney aims Power Rangers at young children. They try to keep things a little family friendly. At the same time, they have to expose the youths of America to multiculturalism. Every Ranger team has been multiracial, which makes families a little out of place. Still, it has happened. In the theme of being with the family this Thanksgiving, we’ll dive into the family tree of Rangerdom.

And no, I don’t know the source of Cosby Zordon, but it seems fitting.

Tokusatsu T’day: Power Rangers RPM Preview Part 1

November 13th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

In our ever-continuuing quest to give you quick looks into what we’re getting in the future, we’re gonna take some time today (”t’day”?) to explain a few things. As Power Rangers RPM takes source footage from Engine Sentai GoOnger, we’ve got a good idea about what’s coming down the pipe.

As things start in the sentai, we’ve got three Rangers. The action figure boxes call them the Eagle, Lion, and Shark Rangers, but for quick purposes, they are the Red, Blue, and Yellow RPM Rangers. Combining their three Zords, they form the (according to the Power Rangers CCG) Engine King. Notably, not Engine King Megazord, but it’s what we would traditionally call a Megazord. This could just be an early translation thing, as it’s Japanese name of “Engine-Oh” directly translates to “Engine King,” or it could just be the new crew in charge.

New crew, you ask? Bruce Kalish, the head of the show from SPD to Jungle Fury, has reportedly left the show.

You can see the Rangers and their Engine King in the footage after the jump that will most likely be shown all of once.

Power Rangers CCG Hitting Shelves

November 12th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

It’s been a slowly-released game, but Bandai has put out the Power Rangers CCG on shelves. Check your local stores, but I’ve found them for $2.99 at Wal-Mart and Target. I haven’t seen a Starter Kit anywhere. Bandai’s site hasn’t updated yet, so most knowledge is coming from fans.

Cards include the awesome artwork from Japan’s RangerStrike card game. Be warned, there are SOME oddities on the cards that I’ve noticed.

  • “Saber-Toothed Tiger Dinozord” instead of “Saber-Tooth Tiger Dinozord”, and then described as “Sabertooth Tiger” on the description.
  • “Ultimus Megazord” card being described as “Isis Megazord” and showing art of a Japanese-only configuration.

TV Review: Jungle Fury’s Finale Brings You To Your Knees!

November 3rd, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

There are two things to look forward in a Power Rangers series: the way it begins and the way it ends. Power Rangers Jungle Fury started with 4 students learning Pai Zhua. 3 of them became Rangers, and the other got possessed by the evil Dai Shi Spirit. Now, we have Phantom Beast Generals, RJ and Dominic, and the Spirit Rangers in the mix! Lily and Theo are now Pai Zhua masters while Casey has been told by RJ there is nothing else to teach him. The Path of Righteous and Now The Final Fury are the final two episodes, and this review will contain many spoilers after the jump.

TV Review: “Jungle Fury” Earns Their “Stripes”

November 1st, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Remember Jarrod? He was the guy in the first episode that had the Lion Spirit then we just started calling him Dai Shi for the rest of the series. Well, we get to see him again this episode as Dai Shi starts to talk on his own. Also, 2 of 3 starting Rangers get promoted. Yea, it’s not really hard to guess which one did not. Other than sounding like a Frosted Flakes commercial To Earn Your Stripes also sets up for the “2 Part” Finale (Again this year we have the last 2 episodes with separate titles).

Tokusatsu T’day: The True Meaning Of Halloween

October 31st, 2008 by Chad Bonin

(Yes, it’s not a “T’day”, unless you never understood that the articles are only posted on days that start with “T”)

Ah, Halloween: a day of monsters, mischief, and mayhem. I almost forgot this happened around 17 years ago, but you should be reminded of the day Frankenstein’s monster unleashed hell on the Rangers in the middle of Angel Grove.

Why don’t we get crazy awesome monsters anymore? Power Rangers RPM isn’t looking any better.

Maybe next year, we’ll regale you with the tale of the Pumpkin Rapper.

TV Review: Hey Hey, We’re “The Monkeys” On Jungle Fury

October 24th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Lily and Theo have a potential relationship happening before this series ends, why can’t any other Rangers in this series be left out? After two Casey centered episodes, Dominic gets to rise on his own and try to prove he can get character development too. We get a lot more Fran time, which I felt she was getting neglected. Also, more Scorch betrayal in this episode as well.
