RUMOR: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers… uncut and remastered?
Take this with a grain of salt. A Rangerboard member saw on a Ranger site’s Twitter that a former producer/actor/writer, Tony Oliver, has heard that Disney plans to air the first three seasons (the traditional, iconic Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers seasons) uncut and remastered.
Yes, it’s a vague rumor, and could easily be the equivalent of the telephone (purple monkey dishwasher?), but… it also makes sense, to an extent.
If you ask someone their knowledge of Power Rangers, they’ll tell you stuff about the original seasons. Zordon, Rita Repulsa, how hot Kimberly was, how cool the Green Ranger was, etc. They’re not going to tell you about the Silver Guardians or Wind Ninja Academy or Mystic Mother.
Additionally, if Disney is planning on not adapting Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, that would make the decided end of Power Rangers, roughly around episode 700. Factor in that kids that would be watching a Shinkenger adaption would have never seen Mighty Morphin’, the episodes could be new to them. Add in that Bandai has been doing it’s best to bring back that era via their Super Legends line, and you’ve got the definite mindset for a revival of some sorts. It’s been 16 years since the franchise premiered.
Ideally, this could lead to season sets; only a handful of episodes of Mighty Morphin’ have been released on DVD, and remastering and making sure they’re uncut would be good preparation for a quality DVD release. Additionally, Bandai could take this to produce more Super Legends toys, such as classic morphers or Megazords.
The only caveats are the theory that the original, Saban-era stuff where it wasn’t union work costs an extra chunk to release, and the fact that Disney most likely no longer has the rights to the Kamen Rider Black RX footage seen in A Friend In Need. Now, if Adness does and they’re willing to play ball, that’d be great, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Disney just ignore that three episode arc.
Anyway, it’s great if true, and if not… take heed of the interest, Disney.
