Goseiger: Is it really that bad?

The following is the opinion of the writer; trust us, not everyone on staff has the same opinions about Goseiger.

Throughout the Toku fandom, many fans have debated on many things. One of those things that is being debated right now is Tensou Sentai Goseiger, the 33rd season in the Super Sentai Series. For those that don’t know, Super Sentai is a Japanese live action show which is the basis for it’s English adaptation, Power Rangers. Now, for those who hate this season, while I disagree with you, I do understand why you feel this way.

First off, the tribes‘ personalities. Hyde of the Seaick tribe, and Aguri and Mounet of the Landick tribe, seem to (at first) tolerate Alata and Eri of the Skick Tribe. The Seaick tribe seems to consist of Gosei Angels who enjoy studying and gathering every known detail before engaging in battle. Hyde, being the sole member of the Seaick tribe, is one of my favorite characters. I find it interesting that he is the leader, even though he is GoseiBlue, he is the leader of the team before going into battle, while Alata is the leader during the battle. Aguri and Mounet are the younger of the group, and a part of the Landick tribe. They are brother and sister and are always ready for a fight. GoseiBlack and GoseiYellow have very cool suit designs and unique weapons. Finally, Alata and Eri of the Skick tribe, are some of the most annoying members of any Sentai show I’ve ever seen (Sousuke>Alata). Their positivism is over the top and most of the time, ridiculous. What I do like is even though Alata is definitely an annoying character, he puts his cheerleader-style personality behind him during battle. GoseiRed and GoseiPink, while annoying at times, both seem to not let that get in the way of their fight. Overall, the character’s tribe personalities seem clichéd at times, and I can sometimes predict what they are going to say in certain situations, but they’re like a wart; they grow on you.

Another thing that seems to bother others and myself is the supporting characters. I like how Professor Amachi is completely oblivious to who the Goseigers really are, but Nozumu is a pain. I have one question for Toei regarding Nozumu; why? Why is it necessary to have a kid? The show could have worked fine if Professor Amachi didn’t have a son. Sometimes I feel like the show seems to pick up, but then goes back down as soon as they remind you that the Gosei Angels have a young groupie back home watching them on Datas’ screen. Which brings me to another character I hate. Datas is Alpha 5 gone horribly wrong. There is no reason other than advertising that Datas has to transform into a Dice-O machine. Dice-O, for those that don’t know, is an arcade game that involves using cards to create your own Sentai team to battle other Sentai Warriors. The game sounds cool and I’m hoping that a Power Rangers version is made eventually. But, seeing the machine in the show as essentially a part of the team is just strange. Datas’ first robot form is a bumbling stumbling idiot with cartoon eyes. The whole suit looks ridiculous. Finally, his Hyper Form is a boxing mecha with a deeper voice and lets him fight along side GoseiGreat. And, the thing I hate most about Datas is that he is a necessary part of the Hyper GoseiGreat combination. Which means, if you wanted to make this combination, you would have to buy Datas Hyper.

One final thing that I see fans arguing about is the mecha, (or the Megazords). GoseiGreat isn’t a bad looking mecha, but the combinations that come about are pretty ridiculous. The combination concept for Goseiger involve the usage of swapping heads, or headders, as Bandai and Toei refer to them. The DX versions of the mechas are already expensive enough. But the headders redefine expense. Each headder is sold in a set of three, which at first seems like you might get a good deal. The problem is that they are still the same price as other Auxiliary mechas, such as Kabuto Origami in Shinkenger or Gunpherd in Go-Onger, which can range $25-$45. If you must have these headders, I’d recommend that you wait until the price goes down. I was able to complete the DX version of Samurai Ha-Oh by getting everything on sale from HLJ. If your patient, the same will happen with the Goseiger mechas. Anyway, back to the combinations. If you just look at GoseiGreat with three new headders, such as Skick GoseiGreat or Seaick GoseiGreat (my favorite) they look alright. But, Hyper GoseiGreat is ridiculous. It is a combination of GoseiGreat, nine extra headders, and Datas Hyper, which looks like a cluster not like any other.

But, negative aspects aside, Goseiger is not a bad show. People should keep in mind, Goseiger could be a lot worse. Goseiger includes some very unique aspects that separate it from past shows. One is the fact that early on, the show establishes the existence of a sixth warrior, similar to Magiranger / Mystic Force. The only difference is that this sixth warrior only appeared in flash back and was killed. This was GoseiGreen, Magis, who was Hyde’s partner a part of the Seaick Tribe. One nod to the fandom was that GoseiGreen was played by Yousuke Ito, aka Sen-chan, DekaGreen from Dekaranger.

Another interesting part of the show is GoseiKnight. GoseiKnight is the extra warrior who appears around episode 17. GoseiKnight is actually a super evolved headder, the lion headder, who takes his mission of protecting the Earth a little too seriously and believes humanity to be a nuisance because they are polluting the Earth. I like GoseiKnight because he alienates himself from the team and only appears in battle, making him different from past extra warriors. One final interesting note about the show is the enemies. Similar to Boukenger / Operation Overdrive, Goseiger includes multiple factions of enemies. But unlike Boukenger Operation Overdrive, these villains do not fight at the same time. The first enemy group is a collection of aliens known as Warstar. Once they are defeated and the Goseigers think that they can relax, the Yuma Beasts show up. Finally, when the Yuma Beasts are defeated, another enemy known as the Matlantis Empire appears, which is a group of machines not necessarily bent on polluting the planet, but merely set on destroying humanity.

So, Tensou Sentai Goseiger definitely has it’s problems and it isn’t as good as it’s predecessor, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. However, like I said, it is not a bad show at all. It is the first time since Timeranger / Time Force that we see the return of the mouth pieces on the helmet, which I think are very retro and a nice nod to past Sentai shows. I definitely enjoy the show and I think if you’re curious about starting to watch the show, you should give it a shot. Some people say they give a show five episodes before deciding to follow it or give up on it. I think ten would be a better number. Some shows, like Kamen Rider W, take a little while to get good. You might like it, you might hate it, but you should definitely at least give it ten episodes or so before you decide on your opinion. Be sure to check back when the show ends for a final season review!
