Well, sure, it doesn’t premiere until February, but the first promo for Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is up and out on YouTube.

And the 11th Doctor is…

January 3rd, 2009 by Chad Bonin

_45343451_newdoctor282While I personally am not the biggest fan of Doctor Who, I’ve at least got to respect it for long-running sci-fi. Like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, it only survives by changing the cast.

Looks like Matt Smith (really generic name) will be picking up the Sonic Screwdriver some time in 2010.

Wasn’t there a limit on how many times he could regenerate?

Who Watches The “Watchmen” Preview?

January 1st, 2009 by Chad Bonin

watchmen-babiesSure, the fate of Watchmen may be up in the air with the whole FOX/WB thing, but as it stands, the movie still EXISTS, and we’re still interested in every little bit of info. THR has a new preview of the movie, with clips from Zack Snyder, up on their site.

I’m still hoping to see this on 3/6/9, and hopefully it does better than Frank Miller’s recent “movie”.

Tokusatsu T’day: New Years for Super Sentai

January 1st, 2009 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

AbaBlack playing the fluteNew Years day is one of the biggest days in Japan. Its more than just a countdown to a ball dropping, Japanese citizens will wear their nicest kimonos, go to temple, and have a big family feast which includes the ozoni soup, fish cakes, and other traditional holiday foods. Also, the kids will play lots of games on New Years. The kids will also watch the yearly Super Sentai New Years episodes, which are probably the worst episodes of the series. Here are the plots of past New Years episodes and all of its silliness.

Lost in Translation: I’m a Common Writer now!

December 31st, 2008 by Richard Hoelsher

If you’re a regular reader of this fine website, you already know about Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. This adaptation of the Japanese tokusatsu show Kamen Rider Ryuki premieres on January 3rd on CW4Kids. As someone who has not seen an Americanized tokusatsu show since the original Power Rangers aired, and as someone who lived through the abortion that was Saban’s Masked Rider, I was curious to see how Kamen Rider Dragon Knight would turn out. I was also curious to see if I can get through an article without making continuous common/kamen puns(the title doesn’t count).

“Gran Torino” Could Have Been “Batmobile”

December 26th, 2008 by Chad Bonin

screen-capture-11screen-captureSo, on Christmas Day, I did the responsible family member thing and went out to the movies with my dad. We were split between Frost/Nixon, The Spirit, and Gran Torino, and eventually boiled down to Clint Eastwood most likely being a badass. I walked out, thinking Gran Torino was a great movie, and easily one of the best things I’ve seen in the past few months.

Yet, I also walked out thinking something else: Gran Torino could have been an excellent Batman film, or at least apes enough things from the Batman-verse.

(WARNING: Spoilers for Gran Torino, and, well… Batman stuff)

TV Preview: Ride With “Kamen Rider Dragon Knight”

December 26th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Kit Taylor finding the Advent DeckOver 35 years, Shotaro Ishinomori created a manga that became tokusatsu television series called Kamen Rider, which is currently still running. In 1995, America was introduced to Kamen Rider with Saban’s Masked Rider. That series was done very badly as it was poorly edited and did not give Ishinomori’s series justice. After that series failed, it seemed impossible to get a proper Kamen Rider series for the English audience. The Wang brothers have finally brought us a Kamen Rider series that does Ishinomori’s series justice.

R.I.P. Eartha Kitt 1927-2008

December 25th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Eartha KittFrom Yahoo News, it is sadly reported that actress/singer Eartha Kitt has passed away today. Kitt was most famous for being the third Catwoman on the 60’s Adam West Batman and singing the famous song Christmas song, “Santa Baby”. Kitt also played Yzma on Emperor’s New Groove and its sequel and tv series based off the movie. Her work was always appreciated from actors and directors as Orson Welles has once called her “most exciting woman in the world”. She unfortuanetly suffered from colon cancer.

Christmas Tokusatsu T’day: Holidays for Super Sentai

December 25th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Don dressed as SantaPower Rangers only have a handful of Christmas episodes since new episodes of the show hasn’t aired in December since Power Rangers Lost Galaxy (and that is because Fox Kids delayed that finale multiple times!). But that doesn’t mean the holidays don’t occur in Japan! Here are some of the plots and monsters from Christmas episodes from past Super Sentai series:

Keanu Reeves Riding in the Bebop?

December 19th, 2008 by Jason Sohiel Asgari

Spike SpeigalAccording to the article in MTV’s Movie Blog, Keanu Reeves is eager to have a movie based on the anime Cowboy Bebop, which he wants to star as Spike Spiegel. The outline of the plot will be about the Red Eye plot from the first episode and will be intertwined with the last episode of the series.

My personal opinion, the West does not need to make movies about Eastern cartoon series.
